Ethiopian commercial farms managing their waste
Through the CTS – EHPEA (Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association) partnership the commercial farms in Ethiopia are being supported in waste management – going from passive waste disposal like dumping the waste from their production to composting and thereby recycling the fertilizers added to the soil. A research team consisting of PhD and Master students from the agricultural universities in Addis Ababa and Jimma as well as ESAT (Ethiopian Society for Appropriate Technology ) has been attached to the programme to collect samples, analyze, verify changes in the composted soil and further recommend actions to the farmers.
By involving academia and the private companies, which is a new approach for EPHEA, positive effects have been created and both parties have been able to make use of and understand the technical new process as well as the practical applications in the field.
After completion the findings from both research and practice will be put in a training manual so that the knowledge can be used by more farmers.
